What Is Dry Rot
?

As a home owner, you always want to protect against dangers to your home, especially the structure of your home. Structural damage will end up costing you thousands of dollars in repair, and can be a really stressful endeavor to undertake. One of the biggest structural threats to your home is dry rot. Most homeowners have heard of dry rot, but what exactly is it, what does it affect, and how is it removed?

Dry rot is decay in wood caused by a fungus called serpula lacrymans. This fungus develops in wood due to the buildup of excess moisture, such as through a roof leak. As the fungus grows, the wood begins to dry out and look blocky or brittle, which weakens the wood. The fungus itself can look like cotton. If the fungus builds up in the trusses of your roof, it can lead to a structural failure. Not good!

Removing the dry rot starts with identifying the source of excess moisture and removing it. This could mean repairing a leaky roof. To remove existing dry rot, an epoxy treatment or copper naphthenate can be applied to kill the fungus so the wood can be restored.
