Why Do Gutters Clog?
Your gutters perform a vital function for your home. Not only do they drain water from your roof, but they redirect water so it does not pour down and erode your foundation. However, they must be functioning properly to perform this task. As most homeowners have experienced, gutters can clog and prevent water from draining.
Many times, clogged gutters are caused by leaves, dirt, and twigs falling into the gutter. Even if they do not make their way to the downspout, they can build up in a portion of the gutter that prevents water from passing through.
Other times, the downspout is either poorly designed or poorly positioned. When this happens, leaves, dirt, twigs, and other debris can travel down the gutter and clog up the downspout as they fall down. This will completely prevent water from draining, which can wreak havoc on both your gutter and your home.
Ice dams can also clog your gutters if melted snow or ice travels down your roof into your gutter and refreezes. Most frequently, however, clogging will occur due to tree limbs that hang over your roof. Leaves and twigs can easily break loose and fall into your gutter.
