What Is Good Roof Maintenance?
Maintaining your roof is an important step in extending the life of your roof and ultimately in saving you money. This should be done ahead of time, before the problems hit, in order to avoid costly repairs to, not only the roof, but even the structure of the home itself. But you may be wondering if you are taking the proper cautions to keep a healthy roof. So, what exactly is good roof maintenance?
One option is to examine your roof from the ground using binoculars. In order to get a closer look, crawl up on your roof and take a look around. Check for damage such as cracked caulk, buckled or curling shingles, missing shingles, bald shingles, or even large amounts of moss. If you spot some of these small problems and are comfortable repairing the roof yourself, you can pick up the supplies at your local hardware store.
However, it is always a good idea to bring out a professional to take a look at your roof. Some of these problems may look small, but could be indicative of a much larger problem (or potential problem) looming underneath. Hiring a professional is a sure way to make sure nothing is overlooked, and can save you future expense.
Additionally, make sure to cut down branches hanging over your roof to prevent excess damage from storms and keep animals away. Keeping the roof free of leaves and other materials will also help prevent the growth of moss or algae.
Make sure to put it on your calendar to inspect your roof at least once a year, but it is wise to inspect it in both the spring and the fall.
