Different roofing materials have their unique properties that affect how they perform. There are many different types of material to choose from: asphalt, metal, wood, tile, and even plants. Of course, each of these styles will vary in cost, but the focus here will be on the composition of each roofing material and how they affect your roof.

Asphalt shingles are made up of asphalt layers that are coated in ceramic granules. These granules help protect the asphalt underneath from breaking, which ultimately protects your home from leaks. These shingles can also be reinforced with fiberglass to make them lighter and more heat resistant.

Metal roofs are typically made up of sheets of steel or aluminum. As you can imagine, these roofs are durable and do not require much maintenance. They are also lightweight, which may seem counterintuitive, but the metal is constructed to be especially lightweight for roofs.

Wood roofs are typically made out of cedar, which looks great and is natural and environmentally friendly. Since wood has crevices that other roofing materials do not have, and since wood is so natural, these roofs require more maintenance to keep them looking good and to keep them from degrading.

Tile roofs are made of hardened clay, which is also very environmentally friendly but is not as prone to degradation. In fact, this is just about the longest lasting and most durable type of roof you can buy.

Green roofs are composed of vegetation that helps with storm drainage. In addition, they give you an additional living space and provide a more natural flare in urban environments.
