How to Replace a Shingle

Replacing missing or broken shingles is an important part of maintaining your roof and extending its life. However, not everyone knows how to replace missing shingles. Here are a few steps to replace your shingles and have a healthy roof and a safe home.

Make sure to examine your roof for missing or damaged shingles. Once you have spotted one, check to see if the roofer left behind any excess shingles. If they did not, try to find the closest match you can.

You will need a hammer, a pry bar, shingles, shingle nails, and gloves to replace your shingles. If your shingles do not have adhesive strips on them, you will need to purchase shingle adhesive from the store as well.

Take your pry bar and loosen the shingles two rows above the damaged area. Once you spot the nails, loosen them carefully, making sure not to damage the shingles still in good shape.
Once removed, take the new shingles and put them in place of the old shingles. Nail them down to secure them, then take your shingle adhesive and reseal all the edges of your shingle. Press down firmly to make sure it is securely in place.

It is best to replace shingles on a relatively cool, dry day, as your roof can get extremely hot when the weather is warm.
